On 13 December 2006 the Australian Government announces it will provide funding to enhance and extend the National Gallery of Australia’s building. The Project cost for Stage 1 is $92.9 million, which includes $20 million for refurbishing the original building. At the new ground-level entrance there will be a dedicated gallery for the 1988 Aboriginal Memorial, one of the most important works of art in the national collection. These will be the first galleries in Australia designed specifically for displaying different aspects of Indigenous Australian Art.
