The Mystique of Art
|
You’ll likely hear an infinite variety of definitions for Art within this blog. Like the poop orifice, everyone has one. But there’s a common one which has always been especially meaningful to me. You’ve undoubtedly heard, “Art is imitation”. For most of my early years, this definition filled me with the guiltiest sense of shameful truth. Many non-artists still labor under the impression that an artistic genius can spring forth entirely unabated by such trivial, earth-bound methods as close observation, education, or practice. After all, look at Shakespeare… (Right, don’t get me started!–Yet…) But for those of us who aspire to creating images, songs, or tales to move people, which of us can deny that somehow, at some point in our past, we were all little more than parrots. |

See Mom’s facial expression, mimic it. Find an interesting shape, copy it. Although… I guess technically our first instinct is to actually ‘taste’ it, but we quickly learn the joys of Crayons which can leave lines on paper that vaguely resembles our shape–not to mention Crayolas taste much better than some shapes, especially those that come from the afore-mentioned orifice.
We watch repeated lip sounds which begin to identify interesting things in our world. We copy the noise and we’re delighted when this lends us a measure of control. We can hear a song, and some can feel its color and flavor, thus they can play it or sing it. Our shapes become symbols for the word noises then the word noises can be broken apart into representative shapes called letters and so on, ad nauseum–mimic, copy, copy, COMBINE… And THIS, of course, is the moment we can technically call ourselves artists. When we string together an original ‘combination’, made from a lifetime’s worth of copying other people’s shit. We have all done it. All of us can claim this glory of ‘creation’. We can all take the pride, only some of us, the praise. But who could deny that we are, indeed, a world full of artists and assholes. It’s only us fools, who feel driven to make it our legacy. Sorry if this spoils the mystique… And of course, I’ll get to my point in the next blog… |
