Intro to Pixiport
Still trying to even out the design and functionality, but lest I should lose my reader (singular), here is a brief article I wrote two years ago which covers my introduction to Pixiport and her Royalness, Helyn Broadhurst;

Michael Mollick 11:35 PM; Chirrup. chirrup… calls a lone cricket outside my window echoing into the still night. Somehow, my little insect buddy never fails to make me think, “Now What?” . chirrup…11:50 PM; I am Linus, “waiting for the ‘Great Pumpkin’, Charlie Brown.” It always seems appropriate at such times for a host of Cyber internet angels to materialize upon my screen, praise my undiscovered genius, then spirit my properly watermarked image away to publishing-heaven, (which takes no percentage on sales, by the way). I actually thought it was happening about a year ago, but it turned out to be Script-kiddies issuing a denial-of-service attack. But this time is different. I’m not going to sit back and wait. I’m going to go out onto the net and find the best - see what they’re doing. But first — is that a digital speck on Sara09.tif? I think I better tweak it a little… |
Journal Entry 10/03/03 - 2:30 AM; There are no words. “Humbling” comes to mind, but it’s not enough to describe the awesome creativity evident from the artists on this website I found. I finally got around to a search engine around 1:00 AM. From dogpile, I typed in the words, “best”, “fine-art”, and “photography”. I clicked on the #1 return which linked here to this amazing site and here I’ve remained for an hour and a half. http://www.pixiport.com/ is far and away the best site of its kind I’ve ever seen. Some familiar names, the rest are those with whom I should become familiar. The uniqueness and depth of these images simply demand it.
My god, this Helyn Broadhurst chick is prolific. Her work is. versatile — warm and embracing one minute, haunting the next — always progressive though, certainly unafraid to challenge tradition. Heh. Too bad she’s probably just a figurehead for this Pixiport Corporation. The lady probably sits around eating ‘bon-bons’ all day, collecting fat checks from a bunch of ’suits’ who cater to her every lazy whim. I’m definitely book-marking this site for… Hello, what’s this? — “Application for Gallery”? Do you think?… Well, why not? What’s it hurt to try? They’re asking for only three examples. My stuff probably won’t get past the disillusioned art school grad in the mailroom, but. If it does, if it somehow gets past all the underlings and reaches someone experienced, then they’ll see the technique and the years of work. BIO- keep it short - the work always speaks loudest - but DO mention my five kids. That always makes people feel sorry for me! Okay, but which three images? Hmm. Sara09 now looks a little under-saturated in the reds. I’ll have to tweak it some more. I’ll send up Sara02, Sara08, and something in a different style from last year Journal Entry 10/03/03 - 4:15 PM; Alright, allright. Hold the fort! Something fishy is going on. I just received an e-mail reply from Pixiport — from none other than Helyn Broadhurst, herself. Someone from the corporate office must have pried her lose from the ‘bon-bons’ long enough for her to dictate a personal reply to me. Check this out! She said my work was beautiful and I’d be “Welcome” as an artist on Pixiport.
Yeah, right! And I was born yesterday…
Perhaps I’m a little guilty of living that famous Groucho Marx line, ” I wouldn’t want to be a member of any club that would have ME as a member.”
Think I’ll do some research and find out what kind of scam this Helyn chick is running.
Journal Entry 10/03/03 - 6:45 PM; Google, Lycos, Yahoo, Dogpile, every one of them reporting the same thing. www.pixiport.com is a content rich “true” portal to the best the web has to offer in digital photography. An entire community of enormous talent banded together to promote their various and common vision. A search on the name “Helyn Broadhurst” in Google brings up over 1300 references. This lady’s “bon-bons” must be laced with ephedra, because she is everywhere. Web-Galleries, newsfeeds, E-zine interviews. They say she works tirelessly within the digital world and without. Her work is imaginative, images that haunt, textures and tones that soothe, yet there doesn’t seem to be any ego evident in her interviews. She is truly dedicated to showcasing the best. Her emails to me have been warm and encouraging. (What’s with the spelling, though?).
So I’ll send her these, my latest best and perhaps by the new year, she’ll have found a place for my work somewhere in the remote corners of her huge galleried domain.
Journal Entry 10/06/03 - 2:32 AM; I’ve uploaded my images to Helyn, my latest series anyway, all except for ‘Sara09.tif’ which I’ve decided to print out and use as lining for my cat’s litter box. Incredibly, she wrote back to me immediately and I think she actually said she was already completing my first gallery. I couldn’t be quite sure because her email contained no vowels. She jokes about it being a “Pixi-curse” or some such.
Silly woman, but her enthusiasm at least, is certainly contagious. I have no idea what the future will hold for me, but acceptance into this community brings promise, not the least of which is that one day, I will be able to understand the bizarre cryptic language which Helyn uses to communicate. Poor dear must be dyslexic.
Journal Entry 11/02/03 - 7:18 PM; Gads, ths s kewl. Pixi-Queen upped mor’ gallreez and my stff bein’ promotd all-over planit. Bin heerin’ from friends and assosiuts from all-ovr and my creativ’ ndex is hopppin’. ‘I’lm tinkin’ “PQ” and Bob mehbe right-onnn. Pixiport IS d’ cheeeze!
